From the beginning Bill Porteous has embraced abstraction as an overriding approach to art making, exploring painting as a philosophical ground of inquiry. His work continually evolves as a dialogue between the visual elements and phenomenological properties of colour, shape, value and surface.
Born in New York and raised in California, Bill discovered his creative path at El Camino College and went on to attain a BFA and MFA from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions and his work can be found in public, corporate and private collections around the world. Working out of his studio in the Selkirk Waterfront, Bill is also known for his passionate and challenging teaching, his life drawing expertise, and recent involvement in several large scale architectural installations in Victoria B.C.
"For me composition is of prime importance in creating a work of art. Much like a jazz musician playing a solo built on an established melody – moving, diverting and finding a way back – on occasion the painting transcends the medium, the intention and the painter."
