The Paper Series by Lis Bailly

It began with a spontaneous photograph of a stack of drawing paper. The image had an ambiguity that intrigued me.

From this initial idea, I began to fold and manipulate large sheets of paper, photograph compositions, and then colourize and enhance – looking to bring out sharp edges, soft gradients, rich colour and surface texture, and the illusion of depth and dimension.

The creative process of this Paper Series is more akin to working on an abstract painting – a convergence of traditional painterly approaches with digital technologies. The final art prints still retain their ‘paperness’, yet a transformation into another state has occurred.
